The BASF South Africa Trust was established as a long-term commitment by BASF Holdings South Africa (Pty) Ltd. to contribute meaningfully to South Africa's transformation agenda through the empowerment of Black women. Rooted in education, development, and sustainability, the Trust has evolved into a transparent Public Benefit Organisation dedicated to creating lasting social impact through access to education and responsible governance.
The Trust was formally established in September 2017 and registered with the Master of the High Court, Johannesburg, in October 2017. From its inception, it was structured as a Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) in terms of Section 30 of the Income Tax Act, ensuring that every activity is undertaken for public benefit and in accordance with South African legislation.
The founding purpose of the Trust is to empower Black women through formal and informal education, improving access to opportunities that contribute to enhanced quality of life, economic inclusion, and Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE).
2017 – Foundation. The Trust Deed was signed and officially registered with the Master of the High Court. Governance structures were established, founding trustees appointed, and the Trust obtained Public Benefit Organisation status.
2018–2020 – Building the Foundation. During these years, the Trust developed its beneficiary selection framework in alignment with the B-BBEE Act, the NSFAS means test, and higher education institution requirements. The first bursaries were awarded to qualifying Black women pursuing studies in science, chemistry, engineering, and related disciplines.
2021–2023 – Growth and Expansion. The Trust expanded its educational support, strengthened relationships with recognised tertiary institutions, and continued improving governance structures, fiduciary oversight, and operational processes to ensure sustainable impact.
2024–2025 – Strategic Maturity. The Trust Deed was reviewed and amended to enhance governance continuity and trustee effectiveness. Additional processes were implemented to strengthen compliance, beneficiary protection, reporting, and responsible asset management. During this period, the Trust also contributed significantly to BASF South Africa's achievement of Level 1 B-BBEE status through 30% Black women ownership.
Since its establishment, the BASF South Africa Trust has continued to remove financial barriers to higher education by providing bursaries and scholarships to deserving Black women. Through these investments, beneficiaries are empowered to pursue careers in chemistry, engineering, science, and other fields that contribute to South Africa's future growth.
Beyond financial assistance, the Trust continues to strengthen partnerships with institutions of higher learning while maintaining robust governance, transparent reporting, and responsible stewardship of its resources. These principles ensure that every investment delivers meaningful and sustainable value for beneficiaries and communities.
The Trust remains an important contributor to BASF South Africa's transformation journey, demonstrating how education, opportunity, and ethical governance can work together to create inclusive and lasting social impact.
